Varminter
Varminter was my first real exploration into game design, made in Unreal Engine in 2024.
Varminter was a 3d Unreal project made in 2024, created by a small team of 5 people across 6 months. The idea was conceived by me over roughly 6 weeks leading up to the assignment. I had the help of two artists doing concept and 3d work, and a musician.
I directed, produced, and programmed Varminter, but also contributed to concept art, 2d art, SFX, etc. A lot of the work I did was managing my team, which gave me invaluable experience in production. The team was hybrid in-person and online-only members, which made communication tricky at times, but ultimately rewarding in the experience I gained.
The primary system I created for Varminter was the inventory, which enabled the player to find resources in the world, inspect them, and then sell them to buy upgrades. This system interacted with the AI: creatures that would roam the world, spawning resources. I also created post-processing effects to bring the world to life and to give it a new sense of depth.
Varminter taught me the difficulties of management between coding and art teams. Striking a balance between polished code and completed assets was difficult to find. I learnt just how fun art direction was, especially on the music side of production!
